Welcome to the InstallerMaker users! Recently I reached an agreement with Aladdin Systems to include the GSL with their "InstallerMaker" product. Simply put, it is StuffIt but it unstuffs the files and folders to pre-defined positions. The person who puts the installer together can set certain conditions when to install the files or folders based on information from the Gestalt Manager amongst other ways. This feature to use the Gestalt Manager is included with the released 2.0 version. For more information about "InstallerMaker" you can contact Aladdin via their usual email addresses (i.e. aladdin@well.sf.ca.us) or contact Leonard Rosenthol (leonardr@netcom.com). A demo copy of InstallerMaker can be found on the usual FTP-sites. Roland Mansson reported a new QuickDraw version (1.3.5?) and an inconsistency with the 'cput' selector. This latter problem is because an interface file is wrong which has been confirmed by Apple (Thanks to Dave Radcliffe). The PowerPC Upgrade Card enabler revealed more machine IDs of upgraded machines. These selectors were found to have some sort of a problem: - ascv (different version format returned by AppleScript 1.0 and 1.1) - aslm (if it returns a version number, it does so incorrect with version 1.1.1 of the Shared Library Manager) - cput (incorrect values for 68K) - evnt (overlap of attribute bits) - intd (bit 1 of response never set on PB Duo 210) - kbd (contradicting information on values for Adjustable Keyboards) - sdvr (two meanings) - grfx, pmgr, qdgx (all return 65536 with System 7.5 beta) Also included are some changes based on information from the April 1994 Developer CD (System Software Edition), the May 1994 Developer CD (Tool Chest) and the E.T.O. #14 CD. Included is some speculative information about the function to which a pointer is returned by the 'vmFn' selector. This selector is returned by RAM Doubler, and seems to provide additional information. Landweber Internet: gdl@maths.ox.ac.uk ALL RIGHTS RESERVED CompuServe: 73131,3326 REGISTRATION FEE: US $15 or UK L10 Do you think your Mac's interface looks flat and boring? Do you wonder why the push buttons are still in black and white, while the scroll bars and windows are shaded with color tinges? Are your eyes tired of staring at white windows? Does the blocky Chicago font get you down? Maybe you just yearn for a red stop sign. If so, then you should try Greg's Buttons. If not, you should still try Greg's Buttons, and after a week or two you'll be shocked by how plain your Mac looks without it! Greg's Buttons is a control panel and requires System 7 and Color QuickDraw. It works fine with both color and gray-scale monitors, and although it will still work on a black and white screen, the effect will not be as impressive. Greg's Buttons is a "fat binary", containing both 680x0 and PowerPC code for optimal performance on both Macintosh and Power Macintosh computers. List of Features o Replaces the standard flat black and white push buttons, check boxes, and radio buttons with tasteful 3-D color ones. These buttons are designed to complement the windows and scroll bars in the System 7 interface, and in particular they use the color tints that you can select in the "Color" control panel. You can choose from two styles of push buttons and three styles of radio buttons and check boxes. o Lets you select the background color of dialog boxes, menus (both the text and background colors), and Finder windows. o Provides the necessary color resource so that the new Open... and Save... boxes (provided by Macintosh Easy Open or the Hardware System Update 3.0) will always use the color small icons. (This is a side effect of the dialog box colorization feature.) o Substitutes a font of your choice (chosen two versions each of Palatino and Helvetica) for Chicago as your system font. o Colorizes the mini icons in Finder list views (View by Name, etc.). (This feature is enabled only under Systems 7.0, 7.0.1 or 7.1.) o Colorizes the stop sign, caution, and note alert icons. Changes since v3.2 o The button drawing routines are now "fat", containing both 680x0 and PowerPC code. I introduced "fat" trap patches in version 3.2, and now Greg's Buttons is as PowerPC-savvy as it is going to get. o Fixed the conflict with At Ease which disabled the Finder window colorization feature and caused the Finder to quit when attempting to open the Greg's Buttons control panel. o Fixed some instabilities in the trap patches that were introduced in version 3.2. Version 3.3 is now significantly more stable, and in particular, it fixes conflicts with SndControl and the BBEdit updater. o Conflict Catcher complained (quite correctly) that Greg's Buttons 3.2 was patching one PowerPC trap with only 680x0 code. I have fixed this. o Fixed a problem introduced in version 3.2 with the excluded apps list. This caused problems with the dialog boxes in SpaceWard Ho!. It is a tool for creating and viewing interactive (and serial) slide shows with hyperlinks between the slides. The slides cannot be created or changed with HyperSlider, they have to be prepared in PICT-format by another program (it is also possible to view slides from a Photo CD). A hyperlink is an invisible region on a slide. The cursor changes its shape when the mouse pointer is positioned on a link. Clicking into that region immediately displays another slide which has been linked to that region. Many hyperlinks leading to many different pictures may reside on each slide. HyperSlider allows to choose among a set of cursor shapes and visual effects for each hyperlink. For example, you could create a "walk-through-show" of your city, where on each place the viewer can decide if he wants to turn to the left, or to the right, or if he wants to zoom into some detail. Viewing a hyper-linked slide show is very much like playing an interactive adventure game. The file hyper-slider-10.hqx is a BinHexed self-extracting Compact Pro archive. A MiniApp usually performs a single task, somewhat of a pre-configured macro wrapped in an application shell. There is no complex user interface or settings to configure. It knows what to do, how to do it, even when to quit. MiniApps require System 7 and generally reside in the Apple Menu Items folder, where they can be reached easily. Although some may be better located in the Startup Items folder. Contrary to systems extensions, which often provide similar functionality, MiniApps do not have permanent memory requirements and are not subject to annoying conflicts. Somethings to look out for: Printing is not very stable. I threw it in as a quick hack to get some text files printed fast. Get Info is also kind of broken but still useable. The program is control by keyboard commands. Its very fast at displaying files. I just leave a copy of it on my desktop and drag any file onto it that I want to read. Yes, you can rebuild your desktop in the background! Here's how: 1. Using the Finder Toggle FKEY (available in sumex), quit the Finder from a running application. 2. Hit the FKEY again to re-launch the Finder. 3. Hold down the command and option keys until the dialog pops up asking if you want to rebuild. Click OK. 4. Switch back to your running application(s). The problem is that while the desktop is being rebuilt in the background, the Finder cannot access the icon information of any running applications. So you end up with generic application icons for everything that was running during the rebuild--including any faceless background applications. What you then have to do is manually re-install each overlooked application's BNDL into the Finder, using ResEdit or Save a BNDL (also available in sumex). Remember to quit each running application before processing it... For faceless apps, this means pulling them out of the Startup Items folder and rebooting. :( This is all rather esoteric and technical information, I know, but for those of you who actually understand what I am talking about, I think you will recognize this as an interesting if not useful tip. Here's a work around: download Termy 2.3 (from an info-mac mirror or umich), set up BOTH Termy and Eudora to use the Serial (not the modem tool). Launch termy, open a terminal window (I use the default Terminal$ but you can give one a name if you like), and dial by hand (type in: atdtnnnnnnn). Go through the login manually until you get to the prompt that wants you to telnet to your POP server. Close Termy's Window (because you've set it up for the serial tool it shouldn't hang up the modem; if it does check you're modem manual for the at command or dipswitch to get it to ignore the DTR line (if that's not the one that hangs up the phone, the manual or someone on info-mac will, I trust, correct my error). You must close Termy's Window or Eudora will think the serial port is in use. Switch to Eudora; if you're lucky you won't even have to ResEdit the resource (see Appendix D if you have to) that controls the format of the telnet command (I had to do that too; it's not hard). You may be able to use a Eudora navout script to hang up, or you can switch back to Termy, open the terminal window and logout. Some HP printers determine whether they are connected to LocalTalk or a serial cable by running a current through one of the pairs of pins (either +/- receive or +/- send). If the current makes it from one pin to the other, it assumes that the current is going through the transformer on a LocalTalk connecter and thus assumes it is connected to localtalk. No current flow = serial cable. I assume that the etherwave looks like a serial cable but expects the Deskwriter to speak localtalk. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten it to work with the Archie part >(searches) though "gets" or retreives work great. I know that a firewall limits internet access to an internal corporate network. I know that most firewalls are composed of servers outside the firewall with heavy duty security and a filtering bridge that only passes packets through the firewall when they come from one of those servers. I know that to go through a firewall from the internal network one logs into an external server and then surfs the external net from that external server. The problem as I understand it is that when you use something like Fetch or Mosaic, the software is designed for direct connections between your Macintosh and the machines on the internet. It expects to send a packet throught the filtering bridge and then directly to the target machine. There is no provision for going through the firewall, through the intermediary server on the internet side of the firewall and from then on to the target machine. Since the firewall filtering bridge does not pass packets directly from the target back to the client, the software fails to function. So, how does a firewall aware internet application bypass or adapt to the firewall? What mechanism is used to put an intermediary between the filtering bridge and the target machine? Our solution was to use the LaserWriter 8.1.1 driver and save it as EPS. cheers, Danny Thomas (d.thomas@vthrc.uq.edu.au) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 May 1994 12:11:14 +1000 From: Danny Thomas Subject: Info-Mac Digest V12 #77 in #77 Greg Fanning writes: > I am having difficulty fixing the icon of my LC520 internal hard disk. > The icon has changed into a blank page with a turned-in top right hand > corner. Is this > symptomatic of a potentially bigger problem? this won't be news to programmers, but in working with 128M MO drives recently I discovered that the drive icon is determined by the disk driver. This is significant when using a collection of removable disks that are formatted with different drivers, eg APS FWB etc. When that removable is formatted you can select an icon which is written into the driver, but unfortunately there is not standardized way to store/access this icon. So if I'm using MultiDriver so I can read occasional DOS formatted MO disks, all Mac MO disks are displayed with the MultiDriver disk icon. If however I disable MultiDriver (which loads the driver as an extension) and use SCSI Probe to mount a FWB-formatted disk, I see the icon that was selected when the disk was formatted. I wish Apple provided system-level support for removable volumes, but such support is also missing from OS/2, DOS etc. cheers, Danny Thomas (d.thomas@vthrc.uq.edu.au) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 May 1994 12:11:18 +1000 From: Danny Thomas Subject: Info-Mac Digest V12 #79 in #79, williams@tours.inra.fr (John Williams) writes: > Anybody else had this problem? I suspect it is because in the LW8 print dialog you are selecting multipurpose for the first page (Paper Source) but leaving AutoSelect for the remaining. Try explicitly selecting the main cassette for the remaining. My explanation is that the level 2 postscript interpreters, specifically the setpagedevice operator, think that the these trays hold the same type of paper. After you've told it to print the first from the multipurpose tray, the setpagedevice looks at where to grab the next page(s) from and decides there's no need to switch trays because they hold the same stock. This similarly aflicts our LW630 and my first attempt at a real solution ran across an undocumented PostScript limitation. cheers, Danny Thomas (d.thomas@vthrc.uq.edu.au) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 May 1994 14:00:46 -0500 From: Paul M Sheldon Subject: Intelligent Character Recognition (ICR) (Connection) Long ago someone wished on this or some other newsgroup that the newton, which looked so much like a hand scanner, would have that faculty.
